I knew I wanted to join PULSE ever since I learned of their mission two years ago as a sophomore during a fall volunteer fair on campus. Now a soon to be University of Pittsburgh graduate (this August!), I feel more prepared than ever to serve the community I have called home since 2014, and to serve the community my family has called home their entire lives.
PULSE cultivates a community of young servant leaders to transform Pittsburgh. They invite recent, college graduates (like myself) to partner with local nonprofits for a year of service and leadership. I got excited about the PULSE program because I have an interest in advocacy and public service. This interest has evolved into a passion that I will further explore through PULSE. I believe that my life’s mission to help others as long as I am able, no matter the size of their communities or their needs. My commitment to serving others is what has brought me to PULSE, and to remain in Pittsburgh this next year with forty one other public servants in the program. I will even get to live with a few of them this year, too!
I am serving with PULSE because I am deeply passionate about Pittsburgh, and the city's greater outlying communities. My entire family was born and raised in the McKeesport, PA area. Of my extended family that has called Pittsburgh home since the 1930’s, only one person has had the opportunity to attend The University of Pittsburgh—me. PULSE represents my greatest challenge yet for Pittsburgh because it will further cultivate my passions through full-time work in the non-profit sector. After previously working in Oakland, and East Pittsburgh, I cannot wait to work in another one of Pittsburgh's diverse communities.
Part of my first task as a PULSE participant is to assemble a team of people who will support me in this work. I realize that I can’t do this work alone, that I need others to come alongside me and partner with me. Would you please consider supporting me in this work? I am in the process of raising a minimum of $2500 to cover expenses for this year of service and leadership. Your support will help impact the lives of Pittsburgh’s most vulnerable.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration. I look forward updating you on my journey with PULSE through this Crowdrise page, Instagram @dscottwa, and over email at email@example.com
Thank you again,
2018-2019 PULSE Participant
