I am so excited to be running my very first Boston Marathon as part of Team Girl Scouts! I was a Girl Scout from 3rd through 12th grade. During those 10 years, I sold countless boxes of Girl Scout cookies in the freezing cold, laughed often, earned my Silver and Gold Award, made precious memories, and developed skills that stay with me to this day.
When my mother was our troop leader, the "leaders' daughters" were always assigned latrine duty - the absolute worst task, but it was a small price to pay for all the lessons she and my other leaders taught me. I'm lucky to have had the opportunity to learn life skills from strong, confident women who embody what I want to be when I "grow up".
For example, when we would brainstorm, we were allowed to throw out all ideas - no matter how outlandish, and trust me, there were some outlandish ones. When it came time to decide between all the different ideas, we would frame decisions in cookie sales - how many boxes do we have to sell to pay for this? To this day, I still approach my budget the same way, considering how many work hours each purchase will cost. In the midst of chaotic and stressful Silver and Gold Award projects, my leaders reminded me that I had a steadfast support network, a detailed plan, and a project I was passionate about. Because they believed I could succeed, I knew I would. I am thankful to the Girl Scouts for teaching me valuable skills for life.
I am very proud to run like a Girl Scout and help the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEMA) raise funds for GSEMA's health and wellness initiatives, which educate girls on how to stay healthy and keep moving! We teach girls about empowerment through sports and the importance of both nutrition and activity, allowing each scout to unleash her inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)TM.
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts is the largest girl-serving leadership development organization in the Commonwealth and serves over 35,000 girls across 178 communities in eastern Massachusetts. We deliver diverse out-of-school programs with the mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Through Girl Scouts, girls explore the world around them, gain self-esteem and leadership skills, and connect with strong women role models. At Girl Scouts, everything she’ll do is designed with, by and for girls.
