Tom Schonauer was a lot of things to a lot of people. A loving husband. Wonderful father. Adored grandfather. Trusted pediatrician. Loyal friend and avid golfer.
But most of all, he was loved.
Tom passed away in January 2014 from a glioblastoma brain tumor. As he was nearing the end of his battle, his family gathered together to be with him at Thanksgiving. He was bedridden, but those of us with two perfectly good legs decided we’d tackle the York, Pennsylvania YMCA 5K Turkey Trot in his honor. And the smile that this effort brought to his face sealed the deal for us – we would make this an annual family tradition. Something we could count on year after year to keep his memory and spirit alive.
And so “Tom’s Turkeys” was born.
Before his illness, Tom served for many years as a Board Member for the Children’s Home of York (CHOY), a social services organization dedicated to caring for Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable children, youths, and families in need. Tom loved his work with CHOY and the feeling that he was making a real difference in the lives of the very children he served as a pediatrician. So it was an easy choice for Tom’s Turkeys to make CHOY the beneficiary of our Turkey Trot fundraising efforts. Over the last four years, we've raised more than $12,000 for CHOY, all thanks to the incredible generosity of friends and family like you.
But we're not done yet!
This year, Tom’s Turkeys will once again be hitting the streets to raise money for this wonderful organization. We won’t be the fastest team out there. Or even the prettiest. (Just ask Tom’s son Dave, who has promised to once again run in his ridiculous turkey costume if we hit our goal!) But we WILL be united in our effort to raise funds for CHOY.If you’ve read this far, you probably knew Tom, so you totally get what this effort is all about. You’re part of our extended family now, and we thank you in advance for your support. Your donation, no matter how small, helps us remember and honor Tom’s work, spirit, legacy, and love.
