Monroe Community College hosts an Annual Walk for Water to benefit Water for South Sudan. This organization, founded by MCC attendee Salva Dut, provides access to clean water and hygiene education to the people of South Sudan. WFSS has now drilled 282 wells in South Sudan, the world’s newest country. We receive no government funding, and are supported entirely by donations from all 50 states and 33 other countries. Funds raised from this year's walk will help Salva and WFSS replace their drilling rig, which will need replacement soon.
MCC’s support, and the walk, have been coordinated through the college’s Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Project (HGHRP). MCC has supported WFSS since 2008, raising over $50,000 to help bring access to clean water to South Sudan.
This year’s walk includes a special partnership with the Rochester Children’s Book Festival (RCBF), honoring Newbery Medal winner Linda Sue Park, whose book A Long Walk to Water has now sold over 1 million copies. RCBF will field a team at the walk and is working towards sponsoring a well through fundraising at the Book Festival on Saturday, November 12.
Rochester Children's Book Festival is offering special prizes for those walking in support of the RCBF team. While supplies last, every $100 donation qualifies for a copy of A Long Walk to Water, signed by Linda Sue Park and Salva Dut, as well as a copy of this year's RCBF poster.
