BENEFITING: CELIAC DISEASE FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: CELIAC DISEASE FOUNDATION
The 2016 TCS New York City Marathon will take place on Sunday, November 6, 2016. Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF) has partnered with TCS to raise awareness of Celiac Disease and other gluten-related disorders. For the past 26 years, CDF has driven early diagnosis and treatment of Celiac Disease through education, advocacy and research, and is dedicated to improving the lives of all people affected by gluten-related disorders.
In 2010 my children (aged 4 and 2 at the time) received a life-changing diagnosis of Celiac Disease. My daughter was 4 and had been a very unhappy toddler, constantly tired and complaining of tummyaches. Thankfully, her doctor knew to test her for Celiac. We then tested our son who was 2 at the time, and he tested positive as well. We were relieved to have discovered this for both of our children at such a young age. But we knew that we had a long road ahead of us, and we still do.
Living gluten-free in a gluten-filled world is both logistically challenging and socially isolating. We have to plan out food for every play date, birthday party, BBQ, vacation, holiday, etc. We also have to worry about cross-contamination because we know that even the smallest amounts of gluten can cause stomach discomfort, vomiting, headaches, etc. in the short-term; and serious long-term complications such as diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer.
That is why I have joined the CDF Team to run the 2016 NYC Marathon to help raise awareness and funds for this life-altering auto-immune condition.
Please join me in support of this wonderful organization that is working hard to improve the lives of my children and all others living with Celiac Disease and gluten-related disorders. With your help, we can improve their quality of life, increase the rate of diagnosis, find better treatment options, and (hopefully!) find a cure.
