EVENT: 2016 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 18, 2016
Mileage Tracker: 274
Dear family and friends,
I have truly been given the opportunity of a lifetime; I will be running the 2016 Boston Marathon. I’m proud to say that I will be doing so on behalf of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and, more specifically, in support of the Bowdoin Street Healthy Champions Program. For those unfamiliar with Bowdoin Street or Healthy Champions, this is an interactive program at Bowdoin Street Health Center designed to create a pathway for economically disadvantaged youth to become ambassadors of health within their own families, schools, and their community.
The program focuses on anti-obesity education, fitness, and community-building serving primarily low-income children ages 7 - 14 with BMI greater than 85% - 90% from the Boston neighborhoods of Bowdoin and Geneva. Members learn about nutrition, healthy foods, food preparation, fitness, and healthy lifestyles, and, perhaps most importantly, they are tasked with sharing what they have learned with those around them. Obesity is a nationwide medical epidemic and Healthy Champions brings a practical, hands-on approach to addressing the challenge in a focused area of high risk.
My adoration of children alone is enough to fuel my passion for this cause; add to that the facets of education, community involvement, and fitness for all, I could not be more entrenched. Coaching a youth soccer team in my own community this fall, I have seen firsthand how physical activity and team-building can affect the lives of the young girls I work with in the most positive way; not only is it fun for me to watch, it is fun for them to learn and develop a new skill alongside their peers. Developing these proficiencies at an early age can make all the difference in terms of a lifelong commitment to wellness, which is exactly what the Healthy Champions Program aims to achieve.
Many know me as a runner, a cyclist, a soccer player, but this here is the BIG LEAGUES. I will be training through the coming winter (if it’s anything like last year, any tips for running in 6 feet of snow would be greatly appreciated) preparing for what is undoubtedly the most celebrated marathon of them all. That being said, I cannot do this without your support, mentally, emotionally, and financially. I have set a goal of raising $7,500, and as a professional fundraiser, I fully intend to meet (surpass) this number, knowing how many wonderful people, far and wide, I have in my corner. Given how important this cause is, I humbly ask for your support by making a gift. Thank you so much in advance and I look forward to sharing my progress with you as I begin this long (and cold) journey. Happy trails!
