My aim is simple. I want more mothers and their babies to survive childbirth. More so, I know that we can make this happen with some very simple help.
That’s why I am asking for your support to give $21 to the IRC to provide an expectant mother with a Baby Kit. If just 3,000 people do this we can provide all mothers at our clinics in Zimbabwe with these life saving kits for a year!
I work for IRC as a maternal health coordinator in the Mutare district in Zimbabwe. Giving birth here is very high risk. In fact, 1 in 34 children will die during childbirth; 1 in 18 die between childbirth and their first year. And 3,000 women die in childbirth each year.
How can $21 change that? The answer is surprisingly simple. You see, the problem is that many women choose to give birth at home. And home may be more basic than many people can imagine, and home is almost certainly many, many miles from any medical help.
What is really sad is that many women give birth at home because they are too embarrassed to come to a medical center –often because they are too poor to even afford baby clothes.
For $21, a Baby Kit changes this. It gives a mothers the bare essentials to help care for her baby including cotton wool, baby soap, Vaseline, towels, a fleece set (jacket, trousers, and booties), diapers, and vests.
I’ve seen that when we provide the kits, women are much more likely to come to our medical centers to give birth. And that simply means that more mothers and their babies survive. Lives saved thanks to a $21 Baby Kit. I know it’s incredible to think that a simple Baby Kit might save a life, but in reality, we now know it does.
But today, we simply don’t have the money to buy the kits we need. We now need 3,000 of these kits at $21 each. That’s $63,000 in total. Each kit will help ensure a mothers and her baby have a safer, healthier start in life.
I hate to think of a poor, frightened mother delivering a baby herself, far from any help. If you want to help, $21 will provide a kit that means more mothers will come to give birth safely in a medical center, and have the basic supplies they need as they welcome a precious new life into the world. Thank you so much.
