We hope to fundraise and offer solar lamps to the women we work with in rural Kenya.

Many parts of the country have yet to receive a steady source of electricity, especially in these rural areas. This lack of energy means there is no source of light in homes. This affects a family in many ways - from the children unable to study in the evenings and do homework, to being able to charge simple electrical devices like cell phones.

The lack of electricity means families need to find an alternative source of light. The most common of these are kerosene lamps. These are bad for the environment, and additionally are bad for the health due to the fumes they ommit.

By supplying these communities with solar power lamps, we are able to offer a clean source of energy, which is both positive for the environment and their health. The solar lamps also have a charging outlet, where users can plug in devices such as cell phones. This is quite crucial, as cell phones in Kenya are used for mobile phone banking, and is often the only form of banking for some communities.

Research has shown that upwards of 70% of Africans who are in need of solar power lamps can’t afford the $12-$18 price point for a basic model. Add the limited distribution in rural areas and the result is that the people who need solar energy the most can't access it.
