Young Streamers in Action
Organized by: MadameMk Henton
EVENT DATE Aug 23, 2014
Against the Stream Magazine is an online publication focused on combatting negative portrayals of the city of Chicago with positive media. We work to negate images that tarnish our city by reflecting the noble, pure, and true talent in and around the city of Chicago. We support small business, budding artists and musicians by giving them a place to flourish. We will be using the money we are funding for our program: Young Streamers In Action.
In starting the Young Streamers In Action program, we hope young creatives realize that they can define what is newsworthy in Chicago. We give Illinois high school students an opportunity to publish the things they find notable in their cities. The students get valuable professional experience as they learn that there are more things in Chicago to capture other than violence.
We hope that students learn that journalism still matters and that it is still relevant even in this age of technology. As a new media source, we show students that journalism is a thriving industry that has newer ways to reach its audience. We aim to dispel the stigma against journalistic creativity by bringing students to the forefront of making news.
In this 12-week program, students learn how to give back to their communities in a valuable way, how monetize their creative gifts, how to seek out and find talent and how to produce content on a website. Students also receive a T-shirt, a certificate of completion and an opportunity to join the staff of Against the Stream Magazine as an intern. Our program begins in September and the money would be used to help pay for an office space, expenses and staffing.
