OUR MISSION: As a 501(c)(3) organization and educational youth development Project, we provide programs to educate, enrich and equip youth to reach their full potential.

At the Continuation H.S. where our YABE' project is located, more than 70% of the youth receive free breakfast and lunch programs and live in low-income areas. Gang violence is very present in their everyday lives. One of the youth in our project recently commented that, " I have lived with the Gangs in our neighborhood all my life; I have seen a man shot in the leg and was bleeding. I even helped to call 911..." I will not live my life in fear or be held hostage by it."

This past Spring, we held our first Art Festival. SouthWest College partenered with us and provided the Space needed for the Art Festival. A "Shout of thanks" again to SWC of Los Angeles. Although it was a total success, some of the youth were concerned that their parents would not attend the show. Comments like, "My parents nerver attend any of my school stuff and I'm tired if asking them..." are obviously heart-breaking. Others commented that their parents "work at night and sleeps during the day...they are not going to get up and come". Nevertheless, I encouraged them to be persistent in asking their parents to attend and perhaps they will be able to come.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to the Professional Artists that worked diligently and tirelessly with the youngsters to "let their creative juices flow" to put together such a fabulous event.

One of the BIG bonuses of the YABE' Project is that the youth get to attend The Apple Store for workshops on Apple's digital Arts apps.These workshops are essntial in helping to "close the digital divide" for youth in underserved communities.

The youth were exposed to the world of photography via a lecture and slide presentation from one of Los Angeles' top photographers. The youngsters listened in awe of the things he shared about pursueing a career in Photography.

I relate these incidents to you so you can see that "we have our work cut out for us..." according to a guest speaker who visited our class. And rightfully so, our task can be daunting as we are working with an age group that needs so much positive guidance and HOPE. When we meet with these young people we reinforce the idea that their situation is not HOPELESS and only need to be viewed from a different perspective. This perspective is one that suggests that if we can't change our environment, then we must change the way we respond to our environment...and it must be positive.

In our after school project, we show them YABE's seven stepping stones to success: "Love self--Love others; Respect self--Respect others; Forgive self--Forgive others; and NEVER GIVE UP! We feel it is important to help these youngsters embrace these concepts on a daily basis. Unfortunately, they live in "HOMES THAT HURT" due to factors such as: lack of parental support, alcohol and drug abuse in the home, victims of crime, pregnancy. These unfortunate circumstances cause the youth to be At Risk for academic and social failure.

Our high quality programming and instruction is innovative, beneficial and rewarding. We provide instruction in personal communication, various Art forms, digital/media Arts which will provide the needed skills and cultural exposure these young need to be able to compete in today's world. YABE' was launched as a project of both educational and life skills training to help youth be a positive contributing force in the communities in which they live; to become responsible and productive citizens of our society.

WHAT'S NEXT for these youngsters....You guessed it , ...Animation!! Not to mention Coding, Graphic Design and much more. We will also introduce the youth to the importance of protecting our environment and saving our planet by recycling.
