You Grow Girl! provides comprehensive services for young women to reach their authentic self through the development of life skills, confidence and self-respect.

According to the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS), more than 30,000 youth annually in foster care either "aged out" of the foster care system (reached age 18) or emancipated without ever being reunited with their birth families or adopted. Many of these youth age out in poor health, both physically and mentally, unprepared for success in higher education, technical college or the workforce and are at a greater risk of experiencing homelessness and engaging in unsafe activities to survive. Young women between 17-24 are at significant higer risk to engage in risky behaviors or become victimized by physical or sexual violence.

On a given night over 9,294 people were known to be homeless in King County. During the annual One Night Count of homeless people in King County event last year, at least 3,123 men, women, and children were without shelter during the three hour street count. “This number is an increase of 14% over those found without shelter in 2013. This number is always assumed to be an undercount, because we do not count everywhere, and because many people take great care not to be visible.” – Source: Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness.

The money raised through this effort will help get a Transitional Living Program (TLP) up and running. The program will focus on individuals ages 17-24 who are socialized and/or identify as female that have recently aged out of foster care, been emancipated or has experienced episodes of homelessness within the past six months. Funds will be used to furnish rooms throughout the program, purchase groceries as well as providing participants with resources to secure employment and permanent housing. Below is a brief description of the program and what it will provide to young women in King County, Washington State.

You Grow Girl!'s TLP program is designed to serve as a one-stop resource for young women who are facing homelessness and also serve as a resource for schools and community providers, thereby improving the lives of young women by streamlining service delivery. Participants will be able to reside in the program for up to two years and will receive free aftercare services for an additional 12 months. Through this program we will provide a safe environment for young women to tackle the fears, insecurities, and pressures often associated with transitioning from foster care or homelessness, to develop the life and healthy relationship skills they will need as they enter womanhood, to find support in each other and to navigate basic needs resources within the community.

It will cost us on the average $65 per day, per participant to operate our six bed program. This includes 24 hours supervised care and comprehensive services (e.g. case management, mental health counseling, chemical dependency treatment, mentoring and life skills & job readiness training).

You Grow Girl! is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and all donations are fully tax deductible. Recognition will be offered as an incentive for donations with donors having their name and/or logo posted within the program and in related You Grow Girl! printed materials.
