EVENT DATE: Nov 19, 2016
The Healthy Living and Life Skills Branch is on its 3rd year of supplying local families with fresh fixings for Thanksgiving and we need your help! A $50 donation will fill a basket with a turkey and all the nutritious fixings for a traditional meal, but we need your help to make this a reality. Consider forgoing a meal out this week and donating that money to ensure our neighbors in Metro-Detroit are able to gather around the table with satisfied stomachs and full hearts this Thanksgiving. The purpose of Fresh Basket is to ensure that families in need within our community, have access to nutritious foods to prepare and share for Thanksgiving. We do this by partnering with a food-access non-profit, Gleaners, who helps us obtain locally sourced produce, dairy, and other pantry staples. These items, alongside a fresh turkey, are packed and hand-delivered by volunteers to the homes of families and seniors in need.
Thanksgiving is a time for families to gather together and share a meal, but for many in the Metro-Detroit community, access to healthy, affordable options is an ongoing hardship and the holidays come as an added cost, not a reason to celebrate. Many families in our communities of Detroit and Pontiac find themselves living amidst a food desert, where it is easy to find a convenience store, but nearly impossible to find a spot that sells fresh produce. Financial hardship, alongside accessibility and lack of transportation, provide insurmountable limitations to families in the community that desire the same opportunity to provide a nourishing Thanksgiving for their loved ones.
