Founded on the belief that supported discovery experiences in nature can act as a catalyst for individual and community transformation, YES Nature to Neighborhoods (YES) offers a menu of programs that support participants to sustain this experience upon return from camp in their urban communities. YES (formerly Youth Enrichment Strategies) was founded in 1999 as a summer program designed to expose children from Richmond, California to parks, museums, zoos, and other cultural and outdoor events. After the initial pilot year, YES expanded to provide wraparound support and underwrite tuition for youth to attend weeklong summer camps across Northern California.

Over the past 16 years YES has sent more than 5,000 youth to summer camp, brought 1,000 families to Family Camp, and has evolved to become a well-established and major promoter of leadership and wellness practices reaching over 1,000 low-income Richmond and West Contra Costa County residents each year. YES serves low-income children and adults from communities of color in Richmond’s Iron Triangle and North Richmond neighborhoods. Fifty five percent of YES participants are Latino, 37% African American, and 8% mixed ethnicity or other. One hundred percent of the children served by YES qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.
