Founded in 1999, Words Alive has 20+ years of experience connecting children, teens, and families to the power of reading. Our work bridges the gap in access to education for underserved children (0-18) and their families through our unique "cradle-to-career" model.
1) hosts workshops on early childhood literacy for families,
2) mobilizes volunteer reading role models to visit classrooms in low-income neighborhoods,
3) leads book group-style meetings for teens to help them extract meaning and fulfillment from text, and
4) coordinates a mentorship and scholarship program for graduates as they pursue post-secondary education.
Each month we serve over 3,500 young San Diegans facing extraordinary circumstances such as homelessness, poverty, foster care, abuse, impact by the juvenile justice system, and teen pregnancy.
