Greater Cincinnati/N. Kentucky Market March of Dimes

THE STORY:

My husband Jeff and I were so excited to learn we were going to have triplets, but we had no idea of the risks involved.  After a number of ultrasounds, we learned that Baby A was low on amniotic fluid.  As a result, I was put on home bed rest at fifteen weeks.  Already having three children, bed rest proved to be challenging.

In early April I woke up and knew something was desperately wrong.  I was bleeding and taken straight to Good Samaritan Hospital.  We learned that Baby A’s placenta erupted and I would not be going home.  All I could think was “it’s too early!” There I received my first round of steroid injections to help with the babies’ lung development.  I was given magnesium to hold off labor so I could receive the second round of steroid injections.  Every day I was in the hospital & didn’t deliver, I was saving my babies 3 days in the NICU.

One night, Baby A was suffering and it was determined I needed to deliver.  My babies were born by emergency C-section at 27 weeks, 1 day.  Karoline (Baby A) was born first weighing 1 lb. 15oz; Elise (Baby B) followed weighing 2 lbs. 1oz.; and Gabriel (Baby C) was born weighing 2 lbs.

My babies were immediately taken to the NICU - our home for the next 11 weeks. It’s a world that most people thankfully never have to see.  My babies were fighting just to stay alive. Karoline was administered surfactant and caffeine therapy.  Her skin was so thin you could almost see right through it.  Once Karoline’s skin improved, Physical Therapy had to stretch and massage her tissue. Elise and Gabriel were on the CPAP to pump a steady flow of air through the nose with a special mask.  They also were administered surfactant.

Today Karoline, Elise and Gabriel are happy, healthy and active 3 1/2 year olds. Without the steroid shots and surfactant therapy developed by the March of Dimes, the outcome would have been far different. We are thankful for their support and the research that helped us to have a positive outcome and are proud to share our story hoping that other families won’t have to experience prematurity and the complications it can cause.
