Right now, famine is threatening the lives of 80 million people- more than half of who are children.
Over 2.5 million of these children are at risk of imminent death due to looming famine in South Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria and Yemen, and alarming levels of food insecurity in 9 additional countries across Africa and the Middle East. No child should be dying of starvation in 2017.
To put this into perspective, right now 1 million children in South Sudan are on the brink of death. This would be the equivalent of every child under the age of 5 in NYC disappearing. A generation completely lost.
Because many of those suffering from famine in these 13 countries are displaced children, today, on World Refugee Day, we are presenting you with a way to help. We are calling on our Foundation champions and all employees to fundraise and donate. The cost to save the life of a child is only $50, which provides a cycle of 150 therapeutic food packets—if $50 is all you raise or give, you have still saved another human being.
Ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) is a miraculous treatment for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. As the world’s largest buyer of RUTF— procuring 80 percent— UNICEF is needed more than ever, as are funds to purchase these critical supplies and rapidly deliver this sustenance to the children who need it most. a
