Over twenty years ago, moved by the Rodney King incident and his travels around the world, musician and activist Peter Gabriel had a vision. He imagined a world in which human rights abusers were held accountable through the actions of everyday citizens. Believing in the power of video to document and expose the truth, he co-founded WITNESS.
Today, we support thousands of citizens turned activists all around the world by providing them with resources to focus and amplify their stories. These tools include apps, comprehensive guides and how-to videos, and the Human Rights Channel on YouTube. We know people risk their lives to document abuse. We are determined to help their footage make an impact.
When WITNESS began, we distributed fax machines and impractically large and heavy video cameras. We’ve come a long way. Today, billions of people have mobile phones in every corner of the globe. In a world where everyone is a potential witness, we help arm citizens with widely accessible tools and techniques to film more safely and effectively. We are constantly adapting and responding to the shifting needs of activists to better support them.
A contribution to WITNESS enables us to continue to empower activists determined to expose the truth and seek justice. Together, we can See it. Film it. Change it.
