The ethos of NYPD With Arms Wide Open is to help police department families care for their children while navigating through the culture, complexities and dangers of being a member of the New York City Police Department. Health insurance provided to NYC employees covers less and less of what special needs families are in need of each year. The out-of-pocket cost of necessary intensive therapies or durable medical equipment can potentially bankrupt a family in mere months! With Arms Wide Open has been able to aid families in the purchase of such therapies and equipment, as well as provide financial support to those facing extended stays in hospitals - both in-state and across the country.
Of the over 60,000 active and retired Police Officers of the City of New York, it is estimated that over 15% (or 9,000 officers and families) are navigating the world of raising a special needs child!
As there are never any dues to members, donations and frequent fundraising are our organization’s only source of funding. To-date, over $250k in assistance has been passed along to those who have expressed a need to the organization. Further information can be found by visiting our website at www.nypdwawo.org
