24 Guys, 5 Days and 525 Miles!!!
On Saturday, October 4, 2014, the Wings Ride team will depart on a 525 mile cycling charity event from The West Clinic to Rosemary Beach, Florida promoting cancer awareness, encouraging a healthy lifestyle and raising funds for Wings Cancer Foundation’s Wellness Program.
Wings Ride will fund Wings Wellness, a program that teaches cancer survivors to incorporate daily exercise, healthy diet, and stress management into their lives after their cancer treatment is complete. Research shows that these activities help survivors recover from their treatment faster as well as prevent future cancer diagnosis.
All of these programs and services are offered free of charge to anyone touched by cancer regardless of where treatment is received.
Wings Wellness includes:
- Exercise classes led by an oncology nurse who is a certified personal trainer and nutrition specialist. She tailors her classes specifically for cancer survivors.
- Yoga classes at area yoga studios. By helping you relax, yoga can reduce the emotional effects of cancer and side effects of treatment including sleeplessness, pain and fatigue.
- Our Oncology Nutrition Specialist helps cancer patients stay on therapy. From better tolerance of chemo to quicker recovery to reduced risk of recurrence – what you eat matters.
- Monthly seminars such as: wellness and exercise, food and nutrition related issues, coping and stress management, and spirituality.
Side effects from cancer treatment can greatly affect the quality of life for many patients. Among the many troubling side effects, loss of functional capacity and fatigue are often described by patients as some of the most debilitating (Hanna, Avila, Meteer, Nicholas, & Kaminsky, 2008).
