Watts/ Century Latino Organization is a 501(c)3 non-profit community based organization located in Watts and founded in 1990. For the past 24 years, WCLO has worked on a variety of crucial issues from inter-racial relationships to school reform. Our current programs are:
- Latino Leadership Training: An intergenerational leadership training program that builds community capacity in grassroots leaders, parents, students, etc and teaches them to organize, speak, and become self sufficient to make a difference in their community.
- Community Based Action Research (CBAR): A leadership training program that teaches community members how to gather and interpret data in order to take the appropriate action towards their findings to bring about positive change.
- Watts Regional School Safety Collaborative (WRSSC): The goal of this collaborative is to convene key community-based organizations, leaders, and stakeholders currently working on safety and safe mobility issues in Watts into a single group of public-private stakeholders to implement a community-wide strategy in the form of a Watts School Safety Action Plan.
- English as a Second Language (ESL): We provide a free multi-level English class to monolingual Spanish speaking adults.
- South Los Angeles Homeowenership Program: In the year 2000, with the hopes of increasing the number of homeowners among low to moderate income Latino and African-American families and individuals, we launched the South Los Angeles Homeownership Initiative. Our amazing HUD Certified Homeownership counselors Ana Lopez and Pedro Gutierrez, with the help of Albeza Ybarra, are able to conduct free First Time Homebuyer Workshops, help those going through foreclosure and those who would like to refinance, as well as walk a client through a loan modification from beginning to end.
- Watts Multi-Cultural Cinco de Mayo Celebration: In 1991, Watts/ Century Latino Organization, kicked off it’s first Annual Watts Latino/ African-American Cinco de Mayo Celebration in the form of a city wide parade in Watts. Full with city representatives, local CBO’s, performers from different cultures, and Cesar Chavez as our first grand marshal and co-grand marshal Davis Rogers(NAACP president in South Los Angeles). Twenty-two years later, this event still fosters multi-cultural understanding, tolerance and unity among the different ethnic groups in Watts and South Los Angeles.
- Navidad en el Barrio (Christmas in the Neighborhood): The main objective of this event is to provide 500 head of households with enough nutritional items to feed a family of four for two weeks. This results in about 2,000 persons served.
- and much more...
