Our mission is to design a low-cost and easy-to-implement water and solar renewable energy system that harvests enough solar energy from the sun and kinetic energy from rainwater to power a shelter. The collected rainwater will be further filtered by the system and stored so that it can be reused as a source of drinking water.

The Vision:

The project is a humanitarian effort that aims to use technology to lower mortality rates and improve the quality of life of people living in isolated areas without access to the electric grid and clean drinking water. The technology will save lives by providing clean, affordable water. Because our solution is completely dependent on renewable energy, the project is also contributing to the greater global effort to reduce nonrenewable energy sources and fight the effects of climate change.

The Target:

While our technology is useful anywhere in the world, our current target population are civilians in Syria who have been cut off from the electric grid and are without adequate water and sanitation resources as a result of poverty, displacement, and the ongoing civil war. According to scholars Ashford and Huet-Vaughn (2000) in their study on the impact of war on women and public health, as many as 90% of people who die in wars are civilians. It is common war strategy to destroy essential infrastructure needed for human survival such as water purification facilities and power generators, so many of these civilian deaths are a result of poor public health outcomes [1]. War only exacerbates the already-scarce water resources in Syria. Even before the war, there was no systematic water purification system available in the country.  

What We Will Do:

In the first phase of the project, the team will work in facilities provided by the University of Nebraska to optimize the prototype so that it can be implemented in two cities in Syria. The team will ensure that enough energy can be harvested to power a shelter (about 3,000 kWh of electricity per year). In the second phase of the project, a water purification system will be created that collects the harvested rainwater so that it can be stored and reused as a viable source of drinking water. In the third phase, the project team will work in collaboration with students and engineering professionals in the chosen Syrian cities to deploy and evaluate the prototype in shelters cut off from the power grid and water sanitation systems as part of a case study. The success of the system will be evaluated in terms of the amount of energy in kWh that the system can produce, the number of hours per day in which electricity can be generated form the photovoltaic system, the quantity of rainwater collected and harvested daily and annually, the amount of energy produced for the size of the shelter, and the amount of water purified by the system. Economic variables that will be measured include the cost of installation, labor, and materials. Finally, through feedback with our partners, sociocultural variables such as the social acceptance of the technology will also be evaluated. If successful, the prototype will be readied for wide-scale adoption.

What We Need:

Our goal of $55,000 will fund the initiative for the next two years. All funds will be put towards the research, material, and implementation costs related to of the prototype system. Thank you for helping us help others.
