The Story

Dakar, the capital of Senegal, is located on the westernmost tip of Africa. One of the impoverished neighborhoods of that city is called Guinaw Rails, which literally means “on the other side of the tracks.” It’s in a low-lying area that floods every rainy season, yet the community is strong. We’ve partnered with the neighborhood association there to support a local grade school building project. The school, L’Ecole Grand Royale, serves nearly 200 students in two small buildings. The rents are expensive, and they would benefit from having their own school, allowing schoolchildren opportunities their parents never had.
