The Healthy Schools Project (HSP) was founded in 2001 as the education arm of Ventura Unified School District (VUSD) Food and Nutrition Services’ (FNS) farm to school program. The HSP equips 6,000 children across thirteen schools with knowledge, skills, and abilities to grow up into healthy adults through experiential, standards-aligned nutrition, cooking, school garden, and farm-based education. During school and afterschool programs, HSP Nutrition and Garden Specialists create opportunities for youth to develop a love for learning, nature, and healthy food in their school garden and kitchen classrooms. Thirteen school gardens are used for growing fruits and vegetables and experiential learning connected to a variety of subject areas such as science, math, language arts, and health.
