UNITE THE STATES
EVENT DATE: Jul 16, 2017
DEADLINE TO GIVE: Jan 16, 2018
Hi there I’m Alex. I’m a middle school teacher based in New Zealand, heading for the States to begin a rather long bike ride. Across 16 States to be exact, July to January, NYC to Seattle, coast to coast, along the coast, 8500km (5200 miles). Aside from seeing this fabulous country from my saddle, I want to give a little back. So while I’m propelling myself by the push of my pedals, I’ll be fundraising for the National Resources Defence Council (NRDC) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
Here’s why: the kids in my class were looking into the most pressing issues facing America in 2017 as it’s pretty topical at the moment. We think our environment and civil rights are pretty important things that are under direct threat from the Trump administration. From the decision to pull the US out of the Paris Climate agreement to current immigration discrimination laws; NRDC and ACLU are major players in fighting the US government on these, and many other issues and they need all the help they can get.
So if you’re feeling disillusioned with the whole US fiasco and want to do something about it, you’re amongst good company! Hit the donate button and select your charity of choice, I don’t see a cent of it as it goes directly to NRDC and ACLU. Go to nrdc.org and aclu.org to find out how your hard earned cash helps. All donations are tax deductible, how good is that!
Oh, and in each State, I’ll have a variety of random and humiliating challenges set by my students to complete if I reach fundraising targets. Donate over $20 and you get to vote on these challenges. Donate $50 and you get to come up for a challenge for me to complete. I’ll be posting updates on when and where these will be happening. Stay sassy :P
