Our commitment to our partner communities is unwavering.

The pandemic has shaken up lives, probably yours too, and exposed cracks in health infrastructure all over the world, and we’re seeing that some communities are harder hit by the virus than others.

UVP communities are among the most vulnerable in the world. Rural families living on less than $2 a day are being stranded due to orders from the Ugandan government drastically limiting public transportation and closing businesses. Why is this so weakening? Many families live on their daily earnings, and when a day or few days passes without income, the situation can get dire very quickly.

Now, UVP’s programs are more important than ever. Despite being unable to health outreaches in groups or even make visits to the field due to travel restrictions, UVP staff are committed to “business unusual”, taking unique, people-centered approaches to continue reaching the most vulnerable communities, while ensuring everyone’s safety. What does this look like? Making lots of phone calls to gather supplies and communicating with VHTs and village leaders and delivering what we can carry on the UVP motorcycle to get life-saving services and materials to our communities.

Help keep Loy, Evelyn, Josephine, and Edmund on payroll. Our small staff work tirelessly all year. In 2019, they implemented programming that provided more than 4,600 people with access to HIV testing, nearly 800 women with contraceptives to avoid unwanted pregnancies, more than 1,000 families now have access to handwashing facilities, and more than 5,000 community members were tested and treated for malaria. By ensuring our staff can keep their jobs, they can continue organizing events during this stressful time and also allow them to support their own families by providing education and food to their children and extended families who have also been effected by #COVID19. Since there is no social support like unemployment insurance in Uganda, keeping our staff members employed is one of our top priorities.

Provide stipends for VHTs and other field workers who are able to carry out work on behalf of UVP. Since not all UVP staff members are able to travel to the villages, we are relying on our networks established in communities to carry out important work like distributing tippy tap materials and providing education in a one-on-one environment.

Provide life-saving handwashing supplies to our partner communities. Our partner communities do not have running water, so access to handwashing can be challenging. By providing materials to make a simple handwashing station, families can have #SafeHands and stay healthy. When a family stays healthy, they can thrive.
