Partner Organization: ByoEarth
Project Description: Nourish International’s UCLA Chapter is engaging in our fourth year of partnership with nonprofit ByoEarth, to build shops and organic gardens in Guatemala. UCLA students fundraise for and collaborate with ByoEarth staff year-round to conceptualize and implement a summer project. During the project itself, ByoEarth employees cooperate with women on the ground in Guatemala to integrate the local groups of women that live in rural areas into the production chain of organic gardening, revolving around vermicomposting by means of skills transferring.
Project Details: Together with ByoEarth, we identify families with children between the ages of 2 and 5 who are most at risk for malnutrition, and build gardens with vegetables and fruits with them. We will offer basic health and cooking classes for parents of these children to learn how to make nutritious meals with the plants that they grow. Our partner nonprofit, ByoEarth, will follow up with the women and families we engage regularly to determine their success and provide additional support. Our goal for this Project is threefold: to empower women through enabling them to run small businesses; to increase income within the villages in which we work through these women-run small businesses; and to improve health, especially in young children, to combat the effects of malnutrition. About Our Partner: Nourish UCLA is in our fourth year of partnership with ByoEarth, a Guatemalan-run nonprofit focused on health and sustainability for the purpose of improving the lives of impoverished communities. Last summer, Nourish International successfully finished part three of the Project with ByoEarth. Over an 8 week period last summer, the ByoEarth team worked with three different communities (Sumpango, Santa Rosa, and Sololá) impacting a total of 25 people, 10 becoming organic producers growing vegetables or their own gardens. This project allowed the team to create a strong relationship with the people in those communities, which we plan to build upon in upcoming years of partnership.
