EVENT DATE: Sep 09, 2012

Liz Finch

Big, exciting news everyone! I'm running my first half marathon on September 9th, 2012, and I'm running it for To Write Love on Her Arms.

I wanted my first half marathon to be MEMORABLE. I wanted it to be for a CAUSE. But not just any cause. A cause that I had a personal connection to and cared about. So let me tell you my personal story. Back in the day, I struggled with self abuse. I found running was my outlit - something I could do to burn the stress away, and end the abuse.

Now I want to use running to donate to the community that helped save my life - To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA). TWLOHA is a non-profit organization that raises money for self injury, addictions, and mental illness (depression).

Here's how importaint this is - and not just to me, but to the WORLD.

121 million people worldwide suffer from depression. (World Health Organization) 18 million of these cases are happening in the United States. (The National Institute of Mental Health)

Between 20% and 50% of children and teens struggling with depression have a family history of this struggle and the offspring of depressed parents are more than three times as likely to suffer from depression. (U.S. Surgeon General's Survey, 1999)

Depression often co-occurs with anxiety disorders and substance abuse, with 30% of teens with depression also developing a substance abuse problem. (NIMH)

2/3 of those suffering from depression never seek treatment.

Untreated depression is the number one cause of suicide, and suicide is the third leading cause of death among teenagers. (NIMH)

Those are some scary numbers. I personally have friends who struggle with depression, self abuse, and addictions. If you think about it, I'm sure that you too know someone who has struggled with this.

Please consider donating to this cause. My goal is to raise $1,000 to combat self abuse, mental illness, and addictions. Thank you!
