I will be running the 2017 NYC Marathon in honor of my dear friend Dan Hanegby.
Dan died on June 12, 2017 after he was tragically hit by a charter bus while riding a Citi Bike. Dan was an avid road cyclist and loved the NYC Marathon with a passion, a race which he completed on three separate occasions. A father of 2 young children, Dan wanted to run the race at least one more time, the next time with his son (age 6) when he would be old enough to run it with him.
I will be running this race in Dan's memory and to raise money for Transportation Alternatives, INC., a charity whose mission is to reclaim New York City's streets from the automobile and to promote bicycling, walking, and public transit. Since 1973, TransAlt has been New York City's leading advocate for better biking, walking and public transit.
Right now, Transportation Alternatives activists are leading the fight to improve infrastructure for bicycling and walking on scores of local streets and to change traffic enforcement policy and practices citywide. The goal is to achieve Vision Zero — the elimination of traffic deaths and serious injuries on New York City’s streets.
