In May, DePauw University will be sending a third team of 18 students to Belfast to assist PeacePlayers International (PPI) in their continuing work to bridge the divide between the Catholic and Protestant communities in Northern Ireland. Children who play together can learn how to live together. That is the premise of PPI, a non-profit organization that uses the game of basketball to unite and educate young people and their communities in the Middle East, Cyprus, South Africa and Northern Ireland. Working closely with PPI staff, the DePauw Tiger Belfast Team (TBT3) will be involved in current in-school and after school programming, including clinics and the culminating event of the year for PPI, Summer Jam. Last year’s fundraising effort allowed PPI to bus children from all parts of Belfast to this all-day basketball party. We also provided t-shirts (with the DePauw logo) for all the participants and were able to donate three portable scoreboards to the program. This year it is again our plan to underwrite Summer Jam transportation and provide t-shirts, and we want to provide the event with customized basketballs featuring the DePauw and PeacePlayers logos. Beyond the financial support, our team will be coaching and officiating and singing and dancing with these special children all day long (take a minute and watch the video created by members of last year’s team). We are excited about the opportunity to learn about life in this post-conflict society and aid in PPI’s efforts to help the two communities move closer to a resolution. It is a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you for any and all support you can give to this very worthy cause. Besides the video from last year's trip, you can find the PeacePlayers website below as well as a short video of PeacePlayers winning the ESPY for the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in 2007!
