Inspired by Ghana's "Year of Return" which commemorates 400 years since the first slave ship arrived in the United States, the Heidelberg Arts Leadership Academy (HALA) has teamed up with community collective, The Great Sankofa (TGS) and national non-profit, Birthright AFRICA, to raise funds that would provide an inaugural group of ten Detroit area youth with an all-expenses paid study abroad trip to Ghana. Any funds raised beyond $50,000 would support TGS with extending this life-changing experience to additional Detroit youth.

The educational arm of The Heidelberg Project, Heidelberg Arts Leadership Academy (HALA), understands the significance of experiential global learning and it is with this mission we introduce Detroit to the Diaspora: Ghana. This transformative, cultural immersion opportunity totals $50,000 and with your support, the funds raised in this challenge will cover the following expenses for a 10-day study abroad experience:

+visas

+passports

+vaccinations

+on the ground transportation

+meals

+admission into cultural and historic sites

HALA students will visit cultural heritage sites and meet with professionals, artisans and entrepreneurs in the industries of business, innovation, agriculture, manufacturing, technology and arts culture. This hands-on exposure will offer an enhanced understanding of Ghana's history and global interconnectedness and will inform student's personal and career pathway development in Detroit and (beyond) ultimately the Diaspora.
