The Dominican Republic is a source, transit and destination point for human trafficking. Globally, human trafficking generates 150 billion USD annually and 9.5 billion USD is generated just from the Dominican Republic. The United Nations ranks the island nation as having the third-fastest growing human trafficking industry in the world.
Domestic-related violence is the leading cause of death among women in the Dominican Republic. With only two shelters operated by the government nationwide, there is inadequate protection for victims of violence.
