EVENT DATE: Apr 24, 2016

Wendy Boyette Allen

Dear Friends and Family: As many of you know our oldest son, Caleb, has diagnosed learning differences. For years we've advocated for him and searched for every resource available to help him reach his full potential, socially and academically. We've tried private school, public school, and even special education services to provide additional support to him while on campus. Last year, as an 8th grader, we decided to homeschool Caleb in hopes of better preparing him for his transition into high school, but even with that year of one-on-one instruction high school proved to be overwhelming. He quickly became very discouraged and his grades were declining week-by-week. After wrestling through his first nine weeks, in a traditional classroom setting, our search continued for the "right school". That's when we remembered a school in Durham we had visited three years earlier, called The Hill Center; and before we knew it Caleb was enrolled and attending! The Hill Center's mission is to "transform students with learning differences into confident, independent learners", and they miraculously do just that. With a 1:4 teacher-student ratio, students are actively engaged in their daily learning and develop a close relationship with their teachers. Early in the year, the guidance counselor set aside a week to help the students identify their learning style and how to self-advocate. This exercise is a huge benefit to the student and the teacher, and just one of the many reasons why we love The Hill Center. As you would expect, a specialized school of this caliber cost money, a lot of money. That's why I'm so passionate about our upcoming fundraiser, The Hill Mile, and asking for your support. The Hill Mile is a "fun run" if you will, a day of celebrating all the students have accomplished with food trucks, inflatables and entertainment. And it's the one fundraiser that we, as families, have the opportunity to participate in and raise money for. All of the funds raised for this event, go towards Student Financial Aid and Teacher Training Scholarships. As recipients of financial aid, we understand first-hand the importance of these specially-allocated funds. Let me close by saying that Caleb, who was talking about dropping out of school 5 months ago just earned an A in English and has maintained above-average grades in foreign language! And what's equally impressive is that he's developed a trust in his teachers, and his confidence is through the roof! I could go on and on............ Thank you for considering how you can be a part of this important fundraising event. We sincerely appreciate it. -Gene, Wendy, Caleb & Connor Allen If you'd like to learn more about The Hill Center I'd love to speak with you personally (919-819-0505), and you can also watch this great video of Hunter, a recent Hill graduate. What she doesn't share in her video that touches my heart is that she's studying to be a teacher and plans to work at The Hill Center after graduating. http://www.hillcenter.org/hunters-story#.VwOuZsezdug
