The Free Black Women's Library is an interactive traveling biblio-installation that features a collection of 1000 books written by Black women. This mobile library also features soundscapes, visual art, writing workshops, performance, film screenings and critical conversation with Black women artists and writers.
The mission of the library is to center and celebrate the brilliance and creativity of Black women in literature and the arts. This project is a labor of love that I started in the summer of 2015 with just 100 books, since then the library has grown tremendously in size and impact.
This mobile library contains books of every genre written by Black women, from fiction to non fiction, children's books to politics, history and spirituality. It pops up monthly in public spaces through out NYC and has appeared at Concord Baptist Church, The Studio Museum in Harlem, MOCADA Museum, Afropunk Music Festival, Bedstuy Pride Festival, Weeksville Heritage Center, New York University, Von King Park, Wendy's Subway Reading Room, Bedvyne Brew, Brooklyn Arts Exchange and The National Black Theater. It is an incredibly laborious project that requires lots of time and attention.
I am in dire need of finances to support its growth and maintenance. I am raising money to cover the cost of
transportation to get the books from place to place
post office box rental where the books are mailed/recieved
a storage space to house the books
a bus or trailer to turn into a bookmobile
a Free Black Women's Library phone app
a summer writers retreat for Black women writers
All funds raised will go towards items listed.
Thank you so much for your support!!
