EVENT DATE: Oct 27, 2013
THE STORY:
For those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, the one year survival rate is 20%, and the five year is 4%. Its tendency to spread silently before diagnosis makes it the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, and unfortunately it is also the least funded of the top 10 cancers.
Survival is far too uncommon, but possible. I have a close family member who is a SIX year survivor, and has never forgotten just how fortunate she is. Due to great doctors, amazing nurses, unwavering support from family and friends, and incredible personal strength, she was able to come out on top and beat the odds. As a survivor, there are always the cell phone alarms ringing as a reminder to take medication. There are doctor’s visits, tests, and dietary restrictions. But there are never complaints. As a family we count our blessings everyday, and look to pay it forward.
Project Purple funds research towards discovering early detection and finding a cure for pancreatic cancer. They also provide a patient financial aid program that helps families pay their daily bills. Lastly, Project Purple offers a scholarship program providing grants to children and grandchildren who have lost a loved one to pancreatic cancer.
On October 27, 2013, I will be running the Marine Corps Marathon for Project Purple. Any donation, big or small, will help save a life or support someone directly affected by this disease. Please join the fight, and help me achieve my goal! Thank you!
