MetroLacrosse to me is all about providing opportunities to be great in unexpected ways.
I started coaching for MetroLacrosse in the Fall of 2006 when introduced to the program by a former colleague and wonderful friend. After one short fall season, I was hooked to the program, to the kids, and to teaching R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Over the years and seasons, I have gotten to know the neighborhoods and people in places like Mattapan, Hyde Park, Roxbury, and Chelsea, several of Boston's historically under-served districts that may have otherwise remained unknown.
In this time, I have personally seen inspiring talent, like Dimitri, awarded scholarships to local prep schools, quite likely leading to a college education, opportunities that might not have otherwise existed. Likewise, I have also witnessed some remarkable epiphanies from young men who discovered how to constructively deal with various issues shortly after admitting (and in some cases, demonstrating) how where they are from, violence is the answer to most of their problems. Personal growth in these very different yet equally significant ways are what make MetroLacrosse such an amazing program and, combined with almost constant entertainment, attract kids and volunteers alike season after season.
By running the Boston Marathon on behalf of MetroLacrosse, I hope to provide back every opportunity I have been given by Metro to ensure that the chance to be great is available for many teams and seasons to come!
By donating to MetroLacrosse, you are providing for an amazing program that does nothing but provide for everyone involved in its family, please be generous!

MetroLacrosse is thrilled to partner with John Hancock and our four runners for the 2012 Boston Marathon in support of the more than 700 urban youth and teens from Boston, Brockton, Chelsea, and Lawrence who participate daily in the programs that MetroLacrosse has to offer. Without your support, the youth that participate in our programs wouldn’t be as successful. Thank you for supporting Team MetroLacrosse!
MetroLacrosse is a non-profit organization whose mission is to address the social and economic disparities that exist in urban settings by inspiring personal, educational and athletic success among urban youth and teens.
Youth who play sports are 57% less likely to drop out of school, 49% less likely to take drugs and 37% less likely to become teen parents. 89% of MetroLacrosse alumni say that the lessons learned in MetroLacrosse were important factors as they made positive choices about other parts of their lives.
MetroLacrosse's original goal was to diminish the disparity between sports programs available to Boston's urban youth as compared to their suburban counterparts. MetroLacrosse recognized the opportunity to achieve a more profound impact on urban youth: to inspire, motivate, and support participants to achieve success both on and off the field.
Formally established in the spring of 2000, the origins of MetroLacrosse date back to 1997 when founder Zack Lehman developed a program for inner-city youth in a single neighborhood of Boston. Based on the explosive growth and demonstrated impact of this program, MetroLacrosse was established to provide similar opportunities to youth and teens throughout Boston’s urban neighborhoods. Today, through a unique integration of lacrosse, youth development and educational activities, MetroLacrosse provides more than 700 youth from urban communities with social, recreational and learning opportunities.
