THE STORY:

Friends and Family -
This year I'm running.

Around this time a year ago, I was diagnosed with lymphoma.  If you recall, what caused me to see a doctor was shortness of breath while I was training to run in the Pittsburgh Marathon Relay for the Mario Lemieux Foundation.  Of course, within a few days of that first x-ray at the doctor's office, I was sitting in the waiting room at the Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers as a patient.
Last year, before I had even started chemotherapy, I asked you all to support the Mario Lemieux Foundation by funding the relay team in the Marathon.  I originally was involved because Alissa's stepfather Glen, a multple myeloma patient, had started the relay team as a cool way to raise a little money to go to blood cancer research.  Coinciding with the news of my own diagnosis, we raised an astonishing $6,500 - making me the top Lemieux fundraiser for the Marathon.  I couldn't run in the race, but your support of this cause last year was incredibly moving to me, and it certainly lifted my spirits on race day 2014, when my path was truly unknown.
This year.  Well, that's just it - there is a this year.  After four months of chemo and a month of radiation, I'm in remission.  And this year, I'm running.
The Lemieux Foundation provides funding for patient care, like the top-notch surroundings at the Blood Cancer Center at UPMC, and raises money for blood cancer research.  You all know the story, but in 1993, Mario was enjoying the greatest season of his brilliant career when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease.  His foundation has been raising money for cancer research and patient care ever since.  I feel incredibly blessed that I made it through the treatment process relatively unscathed and that I received the wonderful, comforting care that I did at the Lemieux Center.  The least I can do as I move forward is to raise money for this most personal of causes.

Needless to say, this cause means a tremendous amount to me, Alissa, and our families. We are all grateful that I'm well on my way to recovery.  But we're most grateful for all the love and support we have from all of you.  Thanks and much love -

Ben

The Mario Lemieux Foundation is dedicated to raising funds for cancer research and patient care, as well as Austin’s Playroom Project, an initiative that creates playrooms for children and families in medical facilities.  The Mario Lemieux Foundation was created in 1993 by hockey legend Mario Lemieux. In that year, Mario was enjoying the greatest season of his brilliant career and on pace to establish a new NHL scoring record. Then he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease.

After a successful battle with Hodgkin's, Mario is now 20 years cancer free and his experience led him to focus on ways to assist those not so fortunate. He devotes much of his time to the Foundation raising funds to help reach the ultimate goal: a cure for cancer.
