We are raising money to help 2 great charities -- It Aint chemo and Climb For Five.
It Aint Chemo is is a boots on the ground non-profit organization in Las Vegas, Nevada that directly supplies patients with comfort items, advice and emotional support.
Launched in January 2010 by Kevin Hoyt, cancer survivor and Las Vegas resident, The idea for the name "It Ain´t Chemo" came about in when Kevin returned to full duty in the fire service and had a very rough day during a training drill. When a co-worker asked if he was OK, his response was "Yup! It ain't chemo!" WHAT WE DO It Ain't Chemo directly provides comfort items to cancer patients, to include (but not limited to) blankets, chemo hats, books, DVD players, movies, toys for children and literature on proper nutrition for patients in chemotherapy.
Some of the services It Ain't Chemo provides, are meals for patients or their families while they are in treatment, rides to get patients to and from their treatments, gift cards for gas expenses or food. It Ain't Chemo has also teamed up with a fantastic organization, Grahmtastic Connection, that provides children with laptops and ipads. Kevin Hoyt also offers personal tips and advice on dealing with cancer treatment side effects and gives patients his own personal contact information to let them know that he will be there if they need him, any time...day or night.
Climb For Five www.climbforfive.com In 2009, after losing his father to cancer, Patrick McCarrick a long time St Baldricks volunteer decided to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to honor him while simultaneously raising money for childhood cancer. While climbing, he came to realize how similar climbing mountains is to the ordeal children and their families endure when a child is diagnosed with cancer. The ups and downs, the fears, the pain, and the joy when treatment is completed; and hence Climb For Five was born.
Patrick has said, " We learn many lessons when we climb each mountain. The most important being, adversity can make you stronger. These kids suffer so much through treatment and don’t complain, they like us discover strength and courage when it’s needed the most"
Climb For Five inspires people to join in the fight to conquer childhood cancers by climbing major peaks around the world with them. All expeditions are guided by professional guide services, creating extraordinary adventures for first-time climbers and experienced mountaineers alike.
Each climber is given a fundraising goal and all money raised goes directly towards helping fund research needed in finding cures, also providing childhood cancer survivors a chance to climb with Patrick and the team.
In 2013 Climb for five wants to provide grants to five survivors to climb Kilimanjaro with the team.
Whether you are seeking a new adventure, pursuing a personal challenge, wish to contribute to finding a cure, or help send childhood survivor on their own personal climb-Climb For Five will introduce you to a world unlike any other.
Climbs so far have included successful summits of: Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, (19,341 Feet) Mt. Rainier in Washington State (14,410 Feet), and Mt Elbrus in Russia, (Europe's tallest peak via the north face 18,510 Feet).
This year Climb For Fives fundraising climb is Mt Rainier, a climb of 14,410 feet in Washington State. It is a five day summit climb June 21 – 25, 2013. The teams will consist of 18 climbers (two separate groups with 9 climbers and 3 guides in each).
