EVENT DATE: Apr 16, 2016
Alzheimer's is a cause dear to my heart. It's personal.
Three strong women in my life who I love dearly know firsthand what living with Alzheimer's is like. My Aunt Ruth, Aunt Esther Lou and Aunt Loretta faced Alzheimer's at the end of their very fulfilling, promising lives. Two of these aunts--Aunt Ruth and Aunt Loretta--have since passed away.
However, right now, I have one great aunt, Aunt Esther Lou, who lives daily not knowing who her family is. Aunt Esther was the "gatekeeper" of the Shannon family's ancestry, my historical family information that dates back to the 1400s. The one lady who I knew would always mail me updated family trees no longer remembers any of the names on our family tree and is unable to be the "keeper of our family history", which is a daunting task, but one she loved.
So, switching gears, when my Aunt Ruth and Aunt Loretta passed away, my heart broke into so many more pieces. Why? Becuase as this disease trumped life as they knew it, I saw my two great uncles, my Uncle Redd and my Uncle Dee (both are my Dad's uncles), sit by their wives' sides until the very end. Daily, they were visiting the loves of their lives, right by their side knowing that their wife might or might not remember who they were or why they were there.
This disease impacts probably someone you know in your life. If not now, it will down the road. That's the cold, hard truth. Don't wait until it impacts your life until you get fired up to do something about it. Take action today and help us tackle Alzheimer's!
As an active woman, it's startling to know that women are at the epicenter of the Alzheimer’s epidemic. Nearly two-thirds of the Americans living with Alzheimer’s – and more than 60 percent of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers – are women. It’s time to take action by taking the field!
Please support my participation in RivALZ, a flag football game and fundraising competition to help end Alzheimer’s. We may be opponents on the field, but when it comes to Alzheimer’s, we’re all on the same side. This is a disease that must be defeated and we need your help to do it. Your donation will advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Thank you for helping us tackle this disease – win or lose, our true goal is a world without Alzheimer’s!
