The Story

EVENT DATE: Sep 21, 2014

DEADLINE TO GIVE: Oct 07, 2014

On September 21, 2014 I am participating in the Northshore Century Ride (100 mile bicycle ride) to raise money for Allenforce, Indo Jax Surf Charities, and St. Mary of the Annunciation parish in Mundelein, IL.  To learn more about each organization, their website, and mission statements, scroll down to the bottom and click on the charity you wish to learn more about.

Once you decide which charity you would like to donate to, click on the orange "DONATE" box and contribute the required minimum of $10 or more to one or as many of these organizations as you like.  After selecting your donation amount, feel free to leave me a word of encouragement in the comments box.  Or, better yet, motivate me further by including a comment to pledge an additional 10 cents, 25 cents, a dollar or whatever amount you choose for each mile I complete.  After the event, I'll report back to you to let you know how far I made it and how much additional funding you helped me raise.  If you’d like to know more about me and my endeavor, click on the orange "see more" link and read on…..

I am a husband, dad, son, brother, patriot, a one-time cheater of death, Parrothead, and fan of the Chicago Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks, and Bandits.

I have no experience fundraising, I am a novice bicyclist with a beater bike (and beater knees), and I have only a basic grasp of social media.  So why would I do a web based self-driven fundraiser involving a 100 mile bike ride?!  Well, I’m still trying to figure that one out myself.  Some clues can be found in researching the organizations I am supporting because each are a tremendous source of inspiration.

Allenforce: I’ve never served in the military.  I’m part of the 99% who benefit extraordinarily from the 1% who do serve.  Supporting Allenforce empowers us to begin to meet our priviledged duty as citizens to care for those who have “borne the battle.”

Indo Jax Surf Charities: why is a Midwest guy like me who can barely swim supporting a North Carolina surf charity?!  For this one, you really ought to check out the video I have linked to this charity.  If these kids can surf, I should be able to go for a bike ride on their behalf.  By the way, the little girl in pink headphones is a friend of our families.  She and her family inspire us by the way they lead their lives every day.

St. Mary of the Annunciation parish: I belong to this parish and my kids attended their exceptional school.  3yrs ago I had a bad accident and members of this parish family (some of whom I had never met before) gave tremendous support to me and my family. As St. Mary’s celebrates their sesquicentennial year, I thought it was a good time to pay them back.

The North Shore Century Ride is organized by the Evanston Bike Club.  The route runs from Evanston to Kenosha and back along Lake Michigan.
