Partner Organization: Global Health Network Uganda (GHNU). (Working to promote health and well being through several health initiatives among community members in northern Uganda.)
Project Description: This summer, a team of Syracuse students will travel to Uganda, to build on GHNU’s mission of providing women and school-age girls with proper hygiene products, to reduce female drop out rates. This year’s projects will be focused on providing opportunities for school-age girls to earn enough sustainable income to purchase pads. Main projects will include building facilities for the girls to raise and sell livestock - pigs and chickens - at two primary schools within the district. The resulting income will be used to purchase sanitary pads. In addition, the intern team will facilitate health education programs at health centers and primary schools throughout the district.
About the Partner: GHN (U) is a charity nonprofit organization founded by a network of international researchers and health activists. It works to promote health and improve life among community members through providing wrap-around services. GHN (U) believes that the best way to achieve health for all is through community-based innovations that enhance local capacity to prevent disease, as well as through the strengthening of local governance to ensure sustainability. Currently it works in Oyam district supporting health and livelihood activities.
