Direlect fishing gear (lost abandoned ,or unwanted fishing gear) a major source of pollution that is threatening the fragile state of our oceans. Hawaiis average population is approximately 1,000,000 if 1/8 of that population went fishing and lost just a 1oz. fishing sinker 1 time there would be 5000 lbs of lead deposited into our oceans and thats just once multiply that by 30 days 150,000 lbs per month 1,800,000 per year.Thats if it was only 1 oz. the reality is most fisherman use anywhere from 1 -12 oz. and even larger fishing sinkers.that just the lead imagine all the spools of mono filament, floaters ,wire leader , swivels the numbers is unbelieveable

Since 2011 lawaiakaikohala has been activly engageing in the hands on recovery of derelict fishing gear on 7 main sites and several alternate sites that have been heavily fished by the recreational or sports fisherman. The fishing gear that is recovered is recyled, reused or disposed of properly.Unfortunenately due to lack of funding and awareness to the problem most of the recycled products mainly the lead sinkers get sold back to the fisherman who in turn deposit it back into the oceans. Not to say its all that bad selling it back to the fisherman at least minimizes new sources of debris from entering our oceans.

I started this project on my own and with the help of my girlfriend and friend have recovered an unbelievable amount of fishing gear ,and the photos I do have show only a tiny fraction of what has been actually recovered .As a lawaia (fisherman) I hope to bring about change to the way practice fishing , raise awareness into the problems , and with an inovated hands on program provide a inspirational program for the community to follow. As a fisherman I practice more traditional ways of fishing used by my hawaiian ancestors for thousands of years.Fishing with nets , spear , traps or hand collecting produces far less lost gear and can yeild enough fish for one to make a living .

I would like to expand my project and need more equipment and possibly manpower for this to happen and ask for any donation thatll make this happen .
