Rowan Dodge is 6 years old. Many of you may know her, many of you may not. Most of you know her dad, Steve. Rowan is filled with light and personality. Her dad is whom Rowan takes after. Steve is a strong, positive, huge-hearted father, partner, and friend.
This is their story:
Rowan was diagnosed 2 years ago with Wilms' Tumor, a rare, kidney cancer that affects children ages 3-4 and becomes less common at the age of 5. She had surgery in the late fall of 2012 where they removed the tumor, but also had to remove the kidney. She and her family endured 6 months of chemotherapy. She bounced back vivaciously and continued to be the energetic, witty, strong-willed little girl she always was and continues to be!
Fast forward to two weeks ago. Rowan had routine scans that were becoming less common as she grew further away from 'danger'. However, the doctors saw something in her last scan that had them worried. She had a battery of tests that showed a growth in the place where her kidney had been.
August 19, Rowan went into surgery for the second time in her short life. The doctors did not quite know what they'd find. Unfortunately, they did find cancer. Again.
We are all incredulous and dumbfounded. However, we must move forward.
Rowan's dad, Steve, is her rock. The two of them are a sight to see. They are both silly and play off each other as she has definitely developed Steve's sense of humor. Steve is devastated and has put all his energy into being strong not only for her, but for her two brothers, Toby and Evan, who are also going through this for the second time.
Last time Rowan was sick, thousands of dollars of medical expenses and other unforeseen costs needed to be paid out of pocket. We expect the same thing will happen this time around, and more, because Rowan will be getting radiation along with the chemo, something she did not have prior.
I have set up this fund for Steve to be able to care for Rowan, Toby, and Evan without having to think that he will be saddled with huge medical bills when all this is said and done. I am asking you for help to assist Steve meeting the excessive bills that are guaranteed to pile up. So, please, donate what you can. It will put all our minds at ease. Thank you.
