THE STORY:

My husband, Jim Morrison, was involved in a serious motorcycle accident on May 12. He was on his way home from a specialized police training when he hit a rock on the road, which made his wheel slip out from under him and throw him from his Harley. In addition to broken ribs, a broken neck, a punctured lung and lacerated kidney, Jim also broke his spine at the T5-T6 vertebrae which has caused paralysis from the chest down. Jim is a 16 year veteran of the Baltimore County Police Department and 19 year veteran of the Maryland Army National Guard. We have been married for almost 11 years and have 3 amazing children under the age of 8. Jim will be undergoing an extensive amount of rehabilitation and we will be facing a series of financial challenges for his care, transportation and housing modifications. Since Jim will require a wheelchair, we will have to move from our home since it is a colonial with lots of steps and very narrow hallways. In looking for a new home, the installation of ramps and modifying the bathroom facilities are a few of the foreseeable needs. In a few months, Jim will also need to have his vehicle modified with hand controls so that he will be able to drive. Jim has spent much of his life serving others through civil service as a police officer and is currently 1st Sergeant of the Maryland Army National Guard 229th Band. Even going back to high school, Jim was part of the Maryland Conservation Corp and in college he was a brother of the national honorary band service fraternity Kappa Kappa Psi. On a more personal level Jim has helped family and friends with countless home improvement projects. Jim has always led a very active lifestyle. He loved running and participating in events such as the Washington D.C. Army 10-miler and the Tough Mudder. Jim plans to continue to participate in the Army 10-miler and other endurance events which will require a hand cycle and other racing equipment. Jim is looking to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle and to continue to be a contributing member to his family, agency, and community. The odds are not in his favor that he will be able to walk again, however, Jim is up for the challenge. Jim and I have remained fairly positive throughout this. We have met some truly amazing people, including other paraplegics, which have been both inspiring and simply helpful in preparing us for the future. Our family and friends have been very supportive and they are the ones that encouraged us to create a web based fundraiser. Anyone that knows Jim can tell you that he has an incredible amount of integrity and sense of duty. He has helped so many people and now is the time that we need your help. If you are willing and able to contribute we thank you in advance and can assure you that in some way we will pay it forward by helping others.
