Hi everyone! I´ve now been in Peru for 6 months and am happy to share that have extended my volunteer time for 2 more months as a volunteer nurse with CMMB (Catholic Medical Mission Board)! The project I have been working in is "first 1,000 healthy days" which focuses on improving women and children's health through education about nutrition, sanitation and fascilitating access to healthcare in underserved/rural and marginalized communities.
Due to chronic malnutrition and poverty, many children and expectant mother's suffer from anemia which leads to poor health outcomes and developement. According to the Ministry of Health in Peru, today, infant anemia affects 43% of boys and girls between 6 and 35 months of age. In comparison, according to the World Health Organization in 2016 only 8.5% of children under 5 years of age had anemia in the United States.
It has been a great experience! I have learned so much, met so many amazing families, children and co-workers who are dedicated in the fight against anemia. At the moment we are in the middle of Anthroprometry to see how many of our kiddos have recovered after 6 months of treatment.
Here you can read a bit more about the progrm.
International volunteering has been a dream and goal of mine since Nursing School and I am so grateful to be serving and learning about the lives and culture of the peope in Huancayo. I´ve met so many hardworking and humble individuals.
Unfortunately, we live in a world filled with poverty, hunger and illnesses, and many people do not have access or means to seek/obtain healthcare. But we can all help! By either volunteering our time or donating to genuine and reputable organizations, we are able to go into the field to serve these communities. I would genuinely appreciate any support and donations :)

CMMB is an NGO focused exclusively on global health care for the world’s poorest populations. We believe in a world in which every human life is valued, and health and human dignity are shared by all. Every year, we are so lucky to have generous, courageous people step forward and volunteer their time and expertise in areas of the world where it is most needed. They leave behind loved ones and employment to support our mission to help vulnerable women, children and families survive.
