Mr. Godfrey Kasozi, 1999 alumni of UC Santa Cruz's Center for AgroEcology & Sustainable Food Systems, CASFS, is Director of CETRUD, Center for Environment Technology and Rural Development, teaching sustainable agriculture in his home of Karasandara, Kasese, Uganda.
His region has experienced an acute drought this past year and require modest infrastructure improvements to bring water from a reliable source to over 4,000 farmers in the region to enable re-establishment of drought resistant food crops.
Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary helped develop a Kasese - Santa Cruz "Friendship City" relation, with delegations traveling to and from each City to visit, sharing sustainable agriculture and sustainable development projects in Kasese region.
This "Flash Fundraiser" will provide drought relief through an emergency water project, enabling the funding and installation of infrastructure improvements within a short one month timeframe. This fund will enable Kasozi to purchase and install a water distribution pump, that can be moved around the region of Karusandara, Kylanga and Kabaka villages as needed, fuel, and piping (similar to a currently functioning unit), to channel water from three reliable water sources: Rivers Sebwe, River Kabaka, and CETRUD’s water canal to over 4,000 farmers and their fields. An additional 3,000 people will benefit by purchasing crops from those farmers.
The funds will also allow the purchase of drought resistant food crop seeds that can be sowed as soon as water is available to quick start the next season's crops (after losing crops earlier this year).
The Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary Foundation will match 100% of all donations up to an aggregate match of $1,500.00. The goal for the Crowdrise fundraiser is $2,000 with an overall total fundraising goal of $3,500, assuming the match level will be reached.
Any funds raised beyond the estimated funds needed for the water pump, ancillary equipment, and seed replacement may be used for a current Rotary global grant project in development for clean water with Santa Cruz Sunrise and Kasese Rotary Clubs.
