BENEFITING: Lakota Children's Enrichment
EVENT DATE: Jul 09, 2015
My name is Summer Montileaux. I am 15 years old and from the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. I have been invited to represent the Oglala Lakota Tribe at the first ever White House Tribal Youth Gathering in July 2015.
Will you help fund my trip?
ABOUT ME: I am a rising High School Junior with a 4.0 grade point average. I am a Co-Founding member of Lakota Children's Enrichment's (LCE's) Youth Advisory Board and have run several programs addressing issues of health, wellness, food shortages and nutrition. My long-term goal is to become a pediatrician and to return to Pine Ridge to help my community.
I am always looking for ways to enrich my education. This summer I received scholarships to attend the College Horizons program at Bowdin College in Maine (a college placement program for Native Youth), and the American Indian Summer Institute, a competitive college prep program for gifted High School students at UCLA. Neither of these programs will conflict with my trip to the White House.
I devote a lot of time outside of school working with LCE to help educate and empower my peers. In 2014, I won an award from ABC/Disney for my service to the Pine Ridge Reservation and earlier this year I was named a Youth Ambassador by the Center of Native American Youth at the Aspen Institute, in its Champions for Change program. Last year I received an Honorable Mention in the Champions program.
I have been invited to represent the Oglala Lakota tribe at the first ever White House Tribal Youth Gathering in July 2015 in Washington DC. If I arrive a day early (staying 3 nights and 2 full days in DC), then I may be able to participate in a tour of the White House!
My chaperone will be LCE's President Maggie Dunne, age 24, who was invited to participate in the Youth Gathering as the Founder of LCE.
