Help us build classroom greenhouses, grow produce in public schools, teach hands-on environmental science through urban farming and boost nutrition and healthy living in underserved communities. 

Students for Service launches its new “Teens for Food Justice” initiative this fall at New Beginnings Charter School in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn in partnership with NY Sun Works, a non-profit organization which builds and uses hydroponic farming systems to educate students and teachers about the science of sustainability. In turn, the Students for Service teen volunteer team will help to build and maintain these urban greenhouse farms within a school classroom as well as run community outreach programs around food literacy, healthy eating and lifestyle choices, and sound nutrition information.

Over the past three years, Students for Service has engaged close to 1000 students in 45 service learning projects in communities throughout our city, positively impacting the lives of scores of New Yorkers. The Teens for Food Justice initiative will focus our energies on increasing food access within communities in need, mobilizing residents towards activism around these issues and providing teens with knowledge of urban agriculture, community-organizing, and coalition-building and leadership skills that they can bring back to their own communities.
