The Arts for Life Scholarship program has been recognized by the school district as a major factor in growing arts participation in school, after school, and summer programs. As we know from numerous studies, arts participation plays a role in enriching all aspects of a young person’s development, especially academics. Friends of the Arts uses this program to level the playing field in giving students access to musical instruments at no charge, providing scholarships for music lessons, art classes, dance lessons, summer programs, and one-on-one attention in the arts. FOTA is working to grow this program to include on-site programming in low income neighborhoods and accessible facilities. With increased resources in the last two years, we have been able to increase both our outreach efforts and funding for scholarships and instruments to the four elementary schools in the St Louis Park School District. The band and orchestra programs in these schools have grown by 30% in that time. The teachers have indicated specifically that increase is thanks to the availability of instruments and funding for students to receive private lessons.
