THE STORY:

The L-5B operated by the Joe Foss Squadron is a true WWII combat Veteran!! This L-5B was built in December 1944. The US Army took possession of the aircraft in early 1945. This aircraft was then transferred to the European Theater of Operations and became a part of the 71st Infantry Division. The aircraft flew missions as an artillery spotter and remained in Europe until the early 1950s when it returned to the U.S. and was flown by the New York Civil Air Patrol until being sold. The Joe Foss Squadron continues to research the history of our aircraft! Our L-5B is also a part of the rides program and we are always excited to provide someone with a ride in a great piece of US military aviation history. Our fundraising goal will help keep this amazing aircraft in the air fulfilling the important mission of the CAF.

In memory of my good friend Major Bob Jansma, who flew L-5s in Burma. My Father was in Burma with Merrill's Marauders, and Medivaced once by an L-5. I introduced Dad to Bob in 2005 here in Albuquerque when Bob had his L-5 painted with an Assam Dragon! Bob asked Dad to go fly for 20 minutes above the Sandia Mountains at 10,000 ASL. Dad was hesitant, due to his new pacemaker, They came back almost an hour later! Dad passed away in 2006, smiling since he was also MAAG Vietnam 1954-57, Airborne-173rd Airborne Brigade in 1965 Vietnam, and 82nd in 1974, when he retired after 3 years as the Senior NCO of JAG 82nd Airborne. Bob has given me a few momentos from Burma and his later service before he Retired. This is for the L-5 in Siuox Falls/ Joe Foss. 12 months ago
