Mission: Working together to create an experience that strengthens individuals, families, and the community by providing a quality, safe, inviting recreational facility; offering fun, meaningful recreational and athletic programs for people of all ages and abilities; fostering the growth and development of our employees; and partnering with the community for long-term success.
Community ice skating in Cedar City began with a naturally frozen rink, bordered by hay bales, on a local farm. The rink quickly showed itself to be a powerful venue for enriching the lives of individuals and families by offering opportunities to participate in many different activities that are wholesome, active, and exciting. Ultimately, hundreds of skaters enjoyed the experiences provided by this makeshift “rink”. As interest and use grew, a committee was formed to create a larger, more dependable rink that could better provide for the community’s skating and ice sports activities. Through their efforts in obtaining a combination of RAP tax funds, a large donation from a local business, and thousands of volunteer hours, The Glacier was born.
The Glacier is a semi-permanent, seasonal, outdoor rink that is open from December through February It is the only skating rink between Las Vegas, NV and Provo, UT and thus, is truly a regional asset. This 501(c)3 nonprofit facility currently serves an estimated 15,000 – 20,000 unique skaters, athletes and visitors during its 3-month season from early December to late February. Programming at The Glacier includes public skating sessions; Learn to Skate classes; youth, high school, college and adult hockey; and private rental of the facility.
Funds raised will help support the capital expense of constructing a new, permanent skating facility that will operate year-round. This will replace the current, semi-permanent, seasonal rink which has limited availability, is inefficient to operate, and is nearing the end of its useful life. This new facility will provide the greater Iron County community with experiences that will strengthen individuals and families, and will foster new friendships throughout the region.
We hope to create a permanent skating facility that will reduce our operational challenges, and increase our ability to do good for our community. The new Family Recreation Center will be the only skating facility between Las Vegas, NV and Provo, UT. It will be located just a few minutes off the South Cedar City I-15 exit, on the same property as the Cedar City Aquatic Center, Fields at the Hill, and Lake on the Hill. It will be directly across the street from Cedar Middle School. The new facility will have a regulation sized skating surface, a roof that will protect all activities from the elements, seating for over 300 spectators, 5 locker rooms, an indoor heated lobby, restrooms, concessions and skate rentals. The North and East sides of the facility will be open, which will provide patrons with the ambiance of outdoor skating combined with the beautiful views of the mountains East of Cedar City.
October – March: This will be an ice facility. It will host public skating sessions and Learn to Skate classes. It will be home to youth and adult hockey leagues. It will also be home to our high school hockey team and Southern Utah University’s club hockey team. The permanent, more dependable facility will also allow for the development of figure skating and curling programs that do not currently exist.
April – September: The facility will be converted to an amazing multi-use facility. The ice will be melted and a sport court that can accommodate all kinds of activities will replace it. Skating will still be the main offering, with a change from ice skating to roller skating. Many of the same skating programs will be offered in the summer as in the winter, such as public skating, Learn to Skate, and roller hockey. In addition to skating, other programs such as volleyball, pickleball, etc., are planned.
In the summer, the Family Recreation Center will be “home base” for a day camp that will take advantage of the many recreational opportunities in the immediate vicinity. The day camp will offer activities all day Monday-Friday throughout the duration of the summer. Activities will include things like: roller skating, volleyball, pickleball, badminton, art projects, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, softball, etc. These kinds of safe, structured, active programs are much-needed in Cedar City when kids are out of school and a large percentage of families have all available parents in the workforce.
